German Style Grilled Cheese

Grilled cheese with a German twist!

Prep Time:  10 minutes   |    Cook Time:  25  minutes   |    Total Time:  35  minutes   |    Servings:  4

Ingredients:

  • 6 strips Appleton Farms  Thick Sliced Hickory Smoked Bacon, diced
  • 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 granny smith apple, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons  Stonemill  Iodized Salt
  • ½ teaspoon  Stonemill  Ground Black Pepper
  • 1 cup  Deutsche Küche  German Style Sauerkraut
  • 8 slices  L'oven Fresh  12 Grain Bread
  • 3 tablespoons  Countryside Creamery  Unsalted Butter, melted
  • 4 tablespoons  Burman's  Dijon Mustard
  • 4 slices  Happy Farms  Deli Sliced Swiss Cheese
  • 4 ounces  Specially Selected  Plain Havarti Cheese, shredded

Directions:

  1. Turn grill on high.
  2. In a medium sauté pan, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp but not all the way cooked. Add onion, apple, salt and pepper. Cook for 15 minutes or until onions are brown.
  3. Add sauerkraut and cook until heated through. Reserve.
  4. Brush 4 slices of bread with butter, spread opposite side with 1 tablespoon mustard. Top each sandwich with 1 slice of Swiss cheese, ¼ of sauerkraut mixture and ¼ of Havarti. Top with remaining bread slices. Place buttered side of bread down on grill. Brush top slice of bread with butter. Cook sandwiches until cheese is melted, flipping halfway through.
